the architect and artist nadim karam wanted to create a sacred refuge for him. a place to experiment with his art, exhibit his unique pieces and that of other artists. having a vast plot of land around his traditional Lebanese house in the mountains, he decided to invert the landscape and build a monumental museum below it. the modern museum displays many paintings and sculptures throughout the space, having corten showcases integrated onto the walls of the interior, connecting it to the landscape area as well. the lighting of the space is intended to create a dramatic museum effect by accentuating each art piece with a projector light focused on it, giving it a contrast in the space. the projectors are mounted onto linear profiles that are installed in a hidden way on the hvac pipe that runs throughout the projector parallel to the wall. the area where the artist works on his pieces is skillfully lit with ambient light that has proper lighting levels. the lighting of the whole project has high specifications (lumen outputs, precision optics and cri values) - to vividly show the colors, objects and space. the main corten showcase has a hidden lighting grazing the concrete wall behind it giving a contre-jour effect to the showcased items. another layer of lighting allows certain openings in this element to have their displayed objects lit from in front from hidden mini projectors above them. the transition ramps and stairs between the interior and exterior project are lit with micro led chips placed in hidden details of the balustrade that give a soft and homogenous light.
