basilica di siponto

the sculpture titled ‘basilica di siponto’, constructed by italian artist edoardo tresoldi, is located in the archaeological park of siponto in puglia, italy. it occupies the vast space as a light and transparent volume, resurrecting the archaeological remains of a 13th century christian basilica. despite its sheer appearance, the installation contains layers of mesh metal that intersect and overlap to form cavernous archways, soaring columns, and a romanesque roof. during the day, rays of sunlight slip through the structure, allowing it to become a 3D illusion. the required serene ambience is provided at night through the use of soft up-lights - spotlights incrusted in the ground, emitting light upwards. lit intensely are the archaeological grounds surrounding the structure, leaving it standing as a grand architectural phantom. the artist completed his structure within five months’ time.
